...the project
Do we use clothing as a costume? Whether we mean to or not, we consider clothes on some level every single day. fired! for wearing pyjamas to work is an exploration of the nonverbal behaviour of clothing and its relationship with performance. More specifically, the project delves into the potential ways in which clothing is used as a form of expression and/or to play a role in society. This research has resulted in a collection of busy, intimate photographs of myself alongside some of my family members and friends.
The methodology for this project was as follows:

Set up a meeting with participants in their respective bedrooms;

Carry out one-to-one interviews – recording sound – with each participant, asking an extensive list of questions to do with their clothing, the reasons behind their style, etc.;

Execute a professional photoshoot in the same location of their bedroom, with both the participant and myself taking it in turns to wear the participant’s favourite outfit, their most comfortable clothes, and their work clothes – with the participant and myself featuring in the same image;*

Interview material (answers to the interview questions) will then be analysed for the written aspect of my research – a booklet;

I will then bring together the most appropriate material for my exhibition piece.
*I will also take photos featuring just the participant in each of these outfits and will then attempt to replicate said images myself.
It must be noted that my methodology was reviewed and improved during meetings with my supervisor, David Waterworth. This is my final submission.

My name is Shakti-Rose Das. I'm a Media and Communications student at the University of Greenwich. Clothes are a great love of mine, especially if they can be found in a charity or vintage store. This project means a lot to me as it has given me a reason to experiment with my photography, and I have also had the chance to partake in some interesting conversations about clothes and what they mean to the people I know.
